VCOM 59 Weekly Assignments
Week #4: February 6, 2012
Pattern Brushes again/logos due
Today will will discuss logos again, possibly in even more depth. In the meantime we will also review pattern brushes and what can be done with them.
More importantly, we will have a round table at the beginning of class with the 57 students to discuss your “Look and Feel” ideas.
Do not work on logos or tag lines. Instead, suggest color schemes and themes, materials, subjects/styles for fonts, photographic imagery, emblems, mascots, etc. Consider the desired customer and develop your ideas to interest and satisfy that customer group.

Assignment: or Monday, January 23
1. Bring in ONE (ONLY ONE!) example of artwork obviously generated in Illustrator. Be prepared to explain how you knew it was Illustrator art.
2. Come prepared to announce whether you will ride the design track or the illustration track this semester and, depending on your focus, what your first project subject will be.
For the Design Track: choose a product or service that interests you and that is not too limited in its need for design. A trip to the grocery store, the book store, the library, your city hall should give you plenty of possibilities. For Jan 23, just have a range of ideas on which you have spent some time and thought. We will have some class discussion to help you settle on a theme.
For the Illustration Track: choose either a commercial character (trade mascot, i.e. Snap Crackle and Pop) or a narrative subject (character in a book or book series). As above, for Jan 23, just have a range of ideas on which you have spent some time and thought. We will have some class discussion to help you settle on a theme.
In both cases, remember what illustrator art looks like so that you are not setting yourself an impossible goal. In the graphics business, we need to make sure our projects are doable in the time alotted.
