Class 7: February 22, 2012
For those of you working on the GODSPELL Project, make sure you visit the blog posts on the 57 site. You can either use the VCOM site navigation ( the blog is listed under ARCHIVES for some reason I haven’t straightened out yet), or just CLICK THIS LINK.
For those of you still struggling with VCOM 59, the class, a new assignment will appear in this space very soon. In the meantime, I have finally been well enough to stop sleeping through the day and make those promised videos. Here are the first set; the pattern/art/scatter brush videos, WITH SOUND! Zounds!!!
The first videos on gradients and blends are now ready. Click on the links below.

Pattern Brushes again; Art Brushes; Scatter Brushes
logos due
Assigned February 1, 2012; due February 8, 2012
Here are three ART BRUSHES videos. They are not the best because the producer is ill and hardly at the top of his game. However, they should give you the basics.
| Art Brushes 1 | Art Brushes 2 | Art Brushes 3 |
In class today, start new sketching on one of last week’s Look&FeelAssignment restaurant names. You may wish to sit in on the VCOM 57 discussion about branding and naming before you do. Then watch the new videos on art brushes and scatter brushes (available no later than Thursday afternoon Feb. 9) which will inhabit this space soon. As you develop this “identity,” attempt to find a coherent, “organic” way to incorporate pattern. art, and/or scatter brushes into your design.
Here are the last to videos about Pattern Brushes:

Pattern Brushes again/logos due
Today will will discuss logos again, possibly in even more depth. In the meantime we will also review pattern brushes and what can be done with them.
More importantly, we will have a round table at the beginning of class with the 57 students to discuss your “Look and Feel” ideas.
Do not work on logos or tag lines. Instead, suggest color schemes and themes, materials, subjects/styles for fonts, photographic imagery, emblems, mascots, etc. Consider the desired customer and develop your ideas to interest and satisfy that customer group.
Download the assignment form here: Look&FeelAssignment.

Assignment: or Monday, January 23
1. Bring in ONE (ONLY ONE!) example of artwork obviously generated in Illustrator. Be prepared to explain how you knew it was Illustrator art.
2. Come prepared to announce whether you will ride the design track or the illustration track this semester and, depending on your focus, what your first project subject will be.
For the Design Track: choose a product or service that interests you and that is not too limited in its need for design. A trip to the grocery store, the book store, the library, your city hall should give you plenty of possibilities. For Jan 23, just have a range of ideas on which you have spent some time and thought. We will have some class discussion to help you settle on a theme.
For the Illustration Track: choose either a commercial character (trade mascot, i.e. Snap Crackle and Pop) or a narrative subject (character in a book or book series). As above, for Jan 23, just have a range of ideas on which you have spent some time and thought. We will have some class discussion to help you settle on a theme.
In both cases, remember what illustrator art looks like so that you are not setting yourself an impossible goal. In the graphics business, we need to make sure our projects are doable in the time alotted.
Week #1: January 18
