VCOM 65/165 :: Electronic Prepress

HOMEWORK due Thursday, April 12 by midnight

Today we held a client meeting with Frances deNisco, Community Education coordinator. As part of the information we all discussed for the upcoming schedule booklet we decided to slightly redesign the existing REGISTRATION FORM and instructions. It is your homework to refer to your notes and tweak the form. E-mail your redesigned native InDesign file to Fredda no later than midnight on Thursday, April 15. There is no need to package the file or send the fonts. I recommend that you break any/all links to existing paragraph styles in order to have a good result.

Refer to this page for Eric’s notes: http://classes.lpcdesignshop.com/vcom65/commed-summer-2011/

CCL feedback notes, April 5

Edit Notes:
·         Remove the orange color on the cover and replace with one of the greens from the logo.  We like the orange color just not on the front cover.
·         Have the logo incorporated on the top of the front cover instead of the bottom
·         Add an inclusion picture if possible
·         Remove logo from back flap picture

CCL info and links

MARCH 1 : Bring your CCL mockups started in InDesign. Eric may have asked you to have these ready for your next internship class. If so, I stand corrected re: date.
Client content for the brochure is here: CCL_TextContent
Download the Requiem font at the link to the right (NOTE: you may only use this font for this client….) Requiem

Summary and Homework, February 22

Discussion: How to concept the design for a brochure or a newsletter. Remember in design everything should start with a clear composition (abstract at first.) Part of your work should be researching excellent brochure design. Recommended: check out stocklayouts.com for inspiration and/or google best brochure design or layout….

Homework: look at the post directly below this one to see info re: OC Green logo. Please send me your comp in pdf format by Thursday, 2/24/11 at noon. Mai-ly is exempt (please work on your Celtic logo and the illustration edits.)

Next week: Bring your CCL mockups started in InDesign. The client will be sending me content tomorrow and I will send it forward. In the meanwhile, download the Requium font at the link (NOTE: you may only use this font for this client….) Requiem

O’C green logo

Download the folder from the link below. In it is the original O’C logo and several samples of logos that incorporate a leaf.

OC_Logo_Green

TASKS:
1. replace the apostrophe with a leaf to indicate that the company is now building “green.”
2. provide a palette of greens that you feel works for this logo
3. do NOT change the O or C

Summary and Update, February 15

Summary:
Worked on designing a look and feel for Building 100 documents.
Discussed notes re: Phantom poster choice (Pat Baker) and how to handle client feedback and requests.

ALL: you must check your e-mail at least once a day since we are in the midst of working for several clients. You need to meet deadlines and get the work moving. A new client, CCL, will be working with us shortly. We reviewed the overall notes and will keep you updated via e-mail. Eric put the existing files on the 65IN site and they are in the 65 and 65IN parts of the server.

HOMEWORK: start thinking about the brochure for CCL; continue working on building 100

The background files for the CCL project are on the About 65IN (http://classes.lpcdesignshop.com/intern/about/) web page or by click this link: CCL files zip format.

Summary and Homework, February 8

Lecture: color

Work in class: Phantom Poster comps. Ken is expecting them tomorrow, Wednesday. Anyone who did not put their comp on the server today, e-mail to me by midnight tonight.

Guest: Sharon Gach requested we work on designing informational posters and a map for the 100 Building glass cases, possibly add info to the existing map(s) located in the parking lot(s) and set up a wayfinding system that distinguishes between the services offered by the Administration and Admissions areas of the college. The Word files she referred to can be downloaded here. If you cannot open them in Word here is a HINT: they can easily be imported into InDesign!!!!  Building 100

NEW WORD DOC PROVIDED BY CLIENT ON  2-11-11 WILL BE PROVIDED TO YOU IN CLASS.

Homework: Review your current skill set strengths and weaknesses when you personally need to use InDesign. Complete at least 3 exercises in the book that you feel will strengthen your skills. We will work on them next week.

Homework: “Phantom of the Country Opera” poster

This project is due next week as a comp. A comp is something that looks “done” although it might actually be a rough draft. Design an 11″ x 17″ poster for the Spring musical, Phantom of the Country Opera.

BACKGROUND INFO: This musical is a spoof on the Phantom of the Opera. Poster should have a country western motif and should convey the idea that this is a funny, joyous show.   Palette: Bright bold colors that exude a country-western feel.

Requirements: Design must include an image of a masked face (as in the Phantom of the Opera) and a cowboy hat. The TITLE logo should have  “country” inserted above the rest of the show title as if it’s an addition. NOTE: This is an existing image for the play as it was presented on Broadway. You may NOT copy it: use it for reference only.

The poster must have the following content typeset in priority order (not necessarily the order of the items as they are listed below….). The TITLE and the DATES are the most important items. All items listed below MUST be included.

Las Positas College Performing Arts presents
PHANTOM OF THE COUNTRY OPERA
A hilarious and heart warming Country Western spoof of Phantom of the Opera

Coast Litho Field Trip notes

EVERYONE should write a thank you note to Steve asap!!!!  steve@coastlitho.net

When specifying a job for an estimate provide the following info:
Job name and job number (when appropriate)
Type of job (e.g., newsletter, booklet, brochure)
# of signatures (kind and number of pages to be printed back-to-back
Final flat trim  size (this should match the size of your document)
How many folds there will be, if any
The type and # of colors that will be used
The kind of file that you will provide: e.g., pdf or native ID?
Quantity needed
Deadline
Delivery method: how do you want the press to get the finished work to you? Pick up? UPS? FedEx?
Desired type of proof: soft or hard copy

A good place to see paper in a retail environment is Kelly Paper or xpedex
jc paper is now closed in Oakland BUT if you spec paper that jcpaper carries, you are usually good to go.
Receiving an estimate from the press:  turnaround w/in 24 hours

SOFTWARE:
Always clean up your art work: get all extra “stuff” off the artboard. Remove layers that are not used, fonts, etc.
Use the appropriate software for the tasks: AI for illustrations; PSD for photographs; InDesign for producing the layout and mockups

Preflight at the press is an automated workflow
A rip rasterizes your job: there is no need for us to trap/Leave knockouts and overprints to the press = trapping done for you
Press sets up repeats in a template, adds color bars and signature markings: just provide ONE (e.g., 8-business cards with one name: provide ONE)
Allows press to troubleshoot job. there are no plates.

You will receive a hard or soft proof, depending on which you request at the time of the estimate.

After job is approved the file is used to image a plate
At Coast the plate will be imaged @ 2540 dpi made from a 200 line screen

On the Press

The plate does not carry the image to the paper: a blanket does
sheet size
gripper? can’t print outside 3/8″

crops: use appropriate software for the job
Set InDesign doc to correct finished size

Post Press
Binding: saddle stitch/perfect binding
foil stamp and emboss
