Topics: what to expect at a press; what equipment is at the press and why; brief overview of paper (much more to come!)
We started building an ID file based on the dimensions and folds of the Modern Postcard packet cover. DOWNLOAD THIS ModernPostcard FOLDER which contains CS5 and CS4 versions of the document we created in class. Use it to make a SIMPLE mock up of something that you might show a client before you start work. Create it for ANY company that you wish. Keep it simple! but definitely include a palette, some paragraph styles and some placed lorem ipsum text as ideas. DON’T go crazy…..
If you have not done so already, do the exercises I assigned last week. If possible, email them to me for review. The latest to turn them in to the server is next week.
We will all meet at LPC next week and then drive to Coast Litho.
Leave LPC between 9:15 – 9:20 AM. The trip usually takes 22 – 25 minutes driving time. We should arrive at Coast Litho in Emeryville at approx. 9:45 AM. Please wait for everyone to arrive before going inside.
REVIEW the Coast Litho website thoroughly. Definitely read about the equipment on the equipment page. Be prepared to take notes/ask questions.

This class is about how to go PRESS with accurate files. You will learn how to use InDesign for color management, and how to properly set up digital files for prepress and print production using the Adobe Creative Suite. You will also learn more about InDesign, how to specify paper, and most importantly, how to build working relationships with your print providers. You will be doing work for real-world clients and building your portfolios and knowledge base in a collaborative working environment that mirrors the real world.
Eric and Fredda are team teaching this course. Eric is also your instructor for the Internship class (VCOM 65 IN).
You will find that the class is often fast-paced. You will be expected to do a lot of work and to be here as much as possible. If you have scheduling issues, please see us asap. We will be going on field trips including seeing and proofing your client’s work on press.
